The profession of an interpreter and cultural mediator is a role that comes to bridge the gap among people that speak different languages and come from different cultures. This does not only require language skills but cultural awareness as well. Connecting two worlds is an action full of challenges but also with its own unique beauty.
In the frame of the speeches organized by Diversity in the Workplace, an initiative of the organization Generation 2.0RED, we had the pleasure to host as speakers, professionals from the organization International Rescue Committee (IRC). Our hosts were from the project management, recruitment and human resources department and their spoke about the profession of interpreter and cultural mediator through they extensive experience.
Anastasia Sikiaridi, Livelihoods Manager, Amadeus Canals, Sr. Livelihoods Officer, and Chrysa Karaouza, Human Resources Officer, spoke to the beneficiaries of the Career Counselling service of our organization, who wish to be employed as interpreters and cultural mediators in the humanitarian sector. They clarified the role of this position, the application processes, the skills that someone needs to respond to the demands, and they shared examples from the everyday work of a cultural mediator. Finally, they answered questions and concerns of people looking for work in this profession.
