The philosophy of sustainability and “zero waste” in fashion
The impact of the increasing demand in the fashion industry both on the environment and on humans is irreversible, and therefore sustainability is becoming a major priority.
3QUARTERS is a store with handmade bags, located in the centre of Athens, which we visited on Friday 13th of August. The store was set up to fill in a specific gap in the Greek market: that of reusing leftover balcony awning fabrics, aiming thus to sustainability, and following a “zero-waste” policy that fosters an environmentally-responsible approach to fashion.
In the context of the activities Employer’s Speech and Educational workplace visit that are part of the project Equality Works implemented under the program Active citizens fund, we met with Giannis Pitsakis, co-owner of 3QUARTERS, along with his sister, who hosted us at their store, introduced us to their philosophy, explained us their goal, and showed us around their workshop, where all the bags are created.

As Giannis mentioned to the beneficiaries of the Career Counselling service participating, the idea originated when with his sister they noticed that the fabrics from the balcony awnings, fabrics that are local and very typical of the city of Athens, end up in the landfill. Thus, they decided to reuse the awning fabrics ending up in the bins, to create handmade bags in different types and sizes. Besides sustainability, 3QUARTERS follows a policy of “zero waste” meaning they produce no waste, by using their own scraps to create their smaller, in size, products.. After answering our questions, Giannis showed us around their workshop, which is located on the top floor of the store, where they create all their products.

Many thanks to Giannis Pitsakis for the time he devoted, and of course to the guests of the Career Counselling service of Generation 2.0 RED, who participated in the Employer’s Speech and Educational Workplace Visit of Diversity in the Workplace.
